I was saddened to hear about some of the inequities in the demographics of our ivy league students. It seems, not surprisingly, that they are predominantly from the wealthier in our society. So what? some say. Their families have earned it. But it is seldom the case.
If we as a people are truly to move toward “equity”, what about changing admission policies at Harvard, Yale and Princeton to reflect this impulse? What about giving those in the lower income brackets some affirmative action preference, based of course on their standardized test scores and high school records? What about balancing their disadvantages with a leg up? These schools are heavily endowed, and could easily afford a move in this direction. The best and brightest among us are not all from families in the upper income brackets.
Here is true equality. America is unique in all of human history, founded on the principle that “all men are created equal”, a principle rooted in eternity. Let’s live it out.
