We just spent a cozy night at Stonehurst Manor in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. After a drive north in the brilliance of autumn’s peak colors, we arrived at this favorite old spot. It’s like coming home to old family friends. They tucked us into a spacious and elegant room on the second floor, complete with mountain views, fireplace, jacuzzi, and four poster bed. Down we went to dinner. Cherry glazed riblets, bacon wrapped scallions, Jonah crab cakes. I don’t know if this is the same Jonah of ancient fish adventures, but whoever he is, he sure knows how to concoct crab cakes. And then some sort of mix of brie, fig jam and apple, in a puff pastry crust. Need I say more? Up to bed, a pounding in the jacuzzi, and a crackling fire. Slept like the proverbial log. Up in the morning for a leisurely breakfast from a full menu. We chose Eggs Benedict and were not disappointed. Hot coffee, plentiful and strong. Friendly staff everywhere, treating us like we belong here. Beautiful fall gardens. Highly recommend this place!
