That’s what happened as I was feasting on the Psalms and ran into Eugene Peterson’s translation of Psalm 65. Here is a rich one.

“Blessed are the chosen! Blessed the guest at home in your place!” Once again I realize that because of the Cross, he’s talking about me. I belong here.

Then this gripping description of our Creator. “Earth-Tamer, Ocean-Pourer, Mountain-Maker, Hill-Dresser…Muzzler of sea storm and wave crash, of mobs in noisy riot …”  Mobs in noisy riot?  We are praying for some of that muzzling in our day, aren’t we?

And look at this! “Dawn and dusk take turns calling, “Come and worship” …from morning till twilight, He calls us into His Presence. He never gets tired of us. Day and night, let incense arise.

Then the Psalmist pleas with the Almighty. “Oh, visit the earth, ask her to join the dance! Deck her out in spring showers, fill the God-River with living water. Paint the wheat fields golden. Creation was made for this!” Aren’t we watching this unfold, morning by morning?

“Drench the plowed fields, soak the dirt clods with rainfall as harrow and rake bring her to blossom and fruit. Snow-crown the peaks with splendor, scatter rose petals down the paths…all through the wild meadows, rose petals. Set the hills to dancing…”

Read it all! Look around you! Take a walk, breathe in the lush green, breathe out your words of praise. He has created it all! He is in control. Life triumphs over death. Light wins over darkness once again, a reminder that our King is coming back.

“Oh, oh, let them sing!”

THE DAY BEFORE EASTER https://rosek.net/2024/04/30/the-day-before-easter/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 05:18:45 +0000 http://localhost/avery/?p=3469 Read more]]> It’s Saturday morning and I’ve just remembered all the items I failed to pick up for Easter dinner. Not wanting to deal with crowds, I crawl out of bed after my morning coffee with my husband and head out to Hannaford.

Oh, good. The parking lot is almost empty and only a few shoppers are drifting through the door. What a perfect morning – blue skied as can be, chilly, typical New England Easter weather.

It’s peaceful in the store and I glide through, maneuvering around shelf stockers, gathering the odd items I forgot. Here I am at the checkout. This line looks promising – one woman ahead of me with a large order, but the clerk is efficient and she’s moving through.

Suddenly everything comes to a screeching halt. The woman is getting on her phone, saying, “This will only take a minute”. It takes much longer than a minute as she is transferring funds into her checking account. Indignation rises within me. What right does she have to slow me down? How piggy! I maintain control and the transfer takes place. The clerk tells her, “You have a very nice lady behind you!” Little does she know what’s brewing in my heart. The woman turns, gives me a lovely smile and thanks me, and takes off. I swallow hard, return the smile, and think, “Rose! You hypocrite!”

What follows is a three way conversation about the vulnerability of electronic transfers, and the joy of the season. “Happy Easter!” is everywhere. Well, on the way home, I’m listening to the song, “And I saw Him, high and lifted up, with power and grace and authority”. Oh, Jesus, I am not like You. Thank you for your resurrection power! Change me Lord! Teach me react like You do!

CONSIDER THE DAFFODILS https://rosek.net/2024/04/30/consider-the-daffodils/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 05:18:08 +0000 http://localhost/avery/?p=3467 Read more]]> Yes, you heard me right. Daffodils, not lilies. This is April in New Hampshire, and lilies are yet to come. Did anyone else notice their bright yellow heads dancing valiantly in the snowy wind just last week?
Jesus talked about lilies, not daffodils, in the gospel of Luke. But perhaps there is a commonality between the two for us who are enduring COVID-19.
27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and tomorrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?
29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.
30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.
32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
So what about those daffodils? God takes more trouble to clothe them than Solomon did with his kingly wardrobe, which was surely lavish. Yet Jesus reminds us that the flowers of the field will eventually be mown down and burned. Not so with us, His precious “little flock”! We are destined to be clothed in His Glory. If He lavishes all that beauty on the daffodils, what does He have in store for us, His children? Everything; His kingdom in its entirety. Yes, it is true. We don’t have to worry about tomorrow. After all, Jesus reminds us, anxiety will not add one hour to our lives. It may even subtract a few of them.
So relax! Soak up the love at the heart of Creation. Let your heart dance with the daffodils. You are loved just as you are. When you have Jesus, you have everything. We too can toss our heads valiantly in the face of this storm.

HOSANNA https://rosek.net/2024/04/30/hosanna/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 05:17:39 +0000 http://localhost/avery/?p=3465 Read more]]>  Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth. (Zech. 9:9,10)
Hosanna, they cried. Save us now. A cry for deliverance from the Roman oppressors. So just as Zechariah’s prophecy foretold, our Lord rode into Death that day, knowing the horrors to come. But on He came, riding on a donkey, as kings rode in peace. Someday, His work of redemption completed, He would ride into Jerusalem on a horse, to destroy every enemy of His Father. But not today. Today He came to make peace through the blood of His Cross.
And He cried for them. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!
35 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. (Luke 13:34-35)
That day is coming! But we who have fallen in love with our Messiah can say that He is indeed our Deliverer, our Salvation, our Reigning King. And together, on this Palm Sunday, we lift our voices in highest praise.

THE CROSS https://rosek.net/2024/04/30/the-cross/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 05:16:41 +0000 http://localhost/avery/?p=3463 Read more]]> Certain well known theologians are gaining popularity by preaching a skewed view of the Cross of Christ. Don’t fall for it. The Cross is not just a metaphor for human suffering. It is a space/time event. It is a visceral, literal blood and guts tearing, ripping open of the flesh and blood body of Jesus, the Man who is God. It reveals to us the full extent of the Love of God. This ultimate sacrifice, the Life of the Son of God Himself, is the only solution to the dark night in our souls. Nothing else is enough to rescue us back from the hand of our enemy.
This perfect sacrifice, the sinless One, His life blood poured out on Calvary, was eternally sufficient to cover the heinous extent of our rebellion. There on that Cross we died with Him, and then rose with Him to a new life, the life God intended for us, life with Him forever. It is finished.
Thank you, Stuart Townend and Keith Getty, for these lyrics:
“In Christ alone!- who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones He came to save: Till on the Cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied, for every sin on Him was laid; here in the death of Christ I live.
There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, sin’s curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ.”
We can’t really improve on the Apostle Paul’s words in Galatians Chapter 6. “May I never boast except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” God forbid – may it never be.

GOD’S ANSWER TO EVIL https://rosek.net/2024/04/30/gods-answer-to-evil/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 05:16:13 +0000 http://localhost/avery/?p=3461 Read more]]> “When I survey the wondrous Cross
On which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride.”
Thank you, Isaac Watts, for these words that reach across 300 years of time to reach us as we struggle to grasp the enormity of the sacrifice of Christ. Think of it. God Himself, absorbing for all time the evil in the world, the evil in us. He was rejected by His Father that we might be accepted. He was torn that we might be healed. He was made sin for us that we might be made righteous. He became a curse for us that we might receive the blessing of the Holy Spirit. He died that we might live. What can we say to this kind of love?
“Were the whole realm of Nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all!”

WHAT THE GUARDS SAW https://rosek.net/2024/03/31/what-the-guards-saw/ Sun, 31 Mar 2024 00:14:00 +0000 https://rosek.net/?p=4646 Read more]]> Early Sunday morning, and darkness still shrouds the Judean hills.  The Roman guards stamp their feet and shiver against the chill, longing for the warmth of the sun’s first rays. It’s been a long night.

Then suddenly, out of the blackness, the Lion of Judah roars!  The earth heaves and trembles with Resurrection power.  Satan stares in horror as Death dies and Messiah turns the world right side up. And what is this that appears to the guards? A  bolt of lightening? No… it’s a huge figure, glowing with light, white as snow.

“Look, Gaius…he’s going to the tomb! He thinks to roll that stone away?  There it goes… I can’t stop shaking!” Down they go.

The women come, check out the empty tomb, hear the angel’s words. “He is not here; He is risen, just as He said”. Then suddenly, their Messiah stands before them. What can they do but worship Him? Then off they go to tell the others.

Meanwhile, the guards are once more on their feet, struggling to figure out how to cope with this disaster. Their lives are on the line for failing to prevent the event of the ages. “Best to tell the chief priests what we saw.”

Off they hurry to report to Satan’s henchmen, who respond to their eyewitness account by tasking them with a prefabricated lie. Not a surprising response, considering the source.

Their instructions?  “Spread the rumor that his disciples came during the night and stole his body while you slept”.  A bit of cash cements the guards’ resolve and the story takes on a life of its own. Possibly one of the biggest lies ever told. But it isn’t big enough. God’s Truth is greater than any lie of the enemy, and His Kingdom grows stronger every day.

Our God reigns! It’s good to remember this Truth on Resurrection Day, 2024.

72,000 ANGELS ON HOLD https://rosek.net/2023/09/01/72000-angels-on-hold/ Fri, 01 Sep 2023 00:05:00 +0000 https://rosek.net/?p=4631 Read more]]> The air was thick with the smell of fear. The powers of darkness, armed and dangerous, converged on the little group in the Garden. Jesus knew His time had come. There was no turning back from the Cross. Suddenly Peter reached for his sword. This was his moment to lay it all down for the Master. He swung, he missed, and the high priest’s servant’s ear went flying.

“No more of this!” said Jesus. Just like that, He touched the servant’s ear and healed him. And then came the rebuke.

“Put your sword back in its place! Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and He will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” (Mt. 26:52-53).

I don’t need your sword, Peter. My Father is ready to send armies of angels down to deal with these rebels and set me free. But how would the scriptures ever be fulfilled? There is no other way.

Peter, stung by these words, would turn away and deny Christ. But a few weeks later, after Jesus gave His Life on the Cross, rose from the Dead, ascended to the Father’s right hand, and poured out the Holy Spirit, Peter stood and declared him to be Lord and Christ. 3000 people came to faith and the Church was born in a day.

Aren’t you glad that He doesn’t give up on us?

GRIEF-BEARER https://rosek.net/2022/10/10/grief-bearer/ Mon, 10 Oct 2022 00:08:00 +0000 https://rosek.net/?p=4635 Read more]]> The work of the Cross is endlessly faceted. “It is finished,” Jesus proclaimed as He released His spirit to the Father. The work was done. He bore our sins in His own body on that Cross, but he bore something else…our griefs and sorrows. Isn’t that astounding? Isaiah tells us this through the Holy Spirit, 600 years before the Cross.

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: (Isaiah 53:4)

Life is full of grief and loss. What eats at your heart at 3:00 in the morning? What old memory attacks you in the middle of the night, burying you in regret for what can never be changed? What unjust betrayal, possibly from years ago, stabs you over and over again?  Did Jesus really bear our griefs and sorrows as well as our sins? Is this too good to be true?

If it is true, then He is able to lift you above the hurt, the loss. He can heal. He can restore hope that better days are coming, for in Jesus, it all ends well. Really well! We can release the pain to Him, our grief-bearer. Beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. That is His promise to us, His children.

BEYOND BUNNIES AND BONNETS  https://rosek.net/2022/04/14/beyond-bunnies-and-bonnets/ Thu, 14 Apr 2022 00:08:00 +0000 https://rosek.net/?p=4633 Read more]]> Easter morning. Tucked in between my mother and father on the church pew, shivering a bit from the walk through the spring rain, I’m drawn into the swell of the organ music, the joyous fervor of the singers around me. A feeling I can’t quite explain transcends my childish delight in my new plush bunny, the chocolate eggs waiting in my Easter basket, my frilly pink dress. I’m caught by a few of the song lyrics. “Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that Death may die”. How can Death die, I wonder.

The stripped down answer lies in the Apostles’ Creed, “I believe in the Resurrection of the Body.”  Really? These are startling words in our post Christian times. Here is bedrock faith, not just a vague hope of some ethereal existence, but a physical resurrection, a transformation, an equipping for Eternity. After all, how would these bodies cope with Heaven?

Our modern day fascination with the care and feeding of our bodies is rampant. Just count the fitness centers in your town. We worship at the altars of physical beauty and health, yet we view our bodies as impermanent and without intrinsic value. We are urged to drench our bodies in pleasure while we can; life is short and “If that’s all there is,” as the song goes, let’s go for it. The body is only “Dust in the Wind”. Or is it?

Scripture pushes back. Six hundred years before Jesus burst out of the tomb on Resurrection morning, the prophet Isaiah wrote, “But your dead will live, their bodies will rise, You who dwell in the dust, wake up and shout for joy. Your dew is like the dew of the morning; the earth will give birth to her dead”. Here is the death of Death. Yes, Dust shall sing! These words shout in the face of despair, pushing back our deepest fears. Too good to be true?

Later Paul the Apostle added this: ” …the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” No longer captured in space/time, no longer subject to death and decay, we will live in His Presence, never to die again. No wonder we sing on Easter morning.
