A CHILD’S YEAR IN RHYME

Tammikuu Tammikuu nips at my nose.
Reddens my cheeks and tingles my toes
What shall I wish for in Tammikuu’s snow?
A hill and a sled and a bonfire to glow
Ice skates and cocoa and cardinals that sing
A promise of hope as the earth tilts to spring

Helmikuu Helmikuu shiny and bright
Trees decked with pearls in the first morning light
What shall I wish for in Helmikuu’s shimmer?
A forest of jewels that twinkle and glimmer
Valentine messages in red and white
Tucked full of love to make our hearts light

Maalaskuu Maalaskuu here comes the show
The earth peeks out from its blanket of snow
What shall I wish for in Maalaskuu’s chill?
The warmth of the sun at the top of the hill
What’s that I hear? The ice cream cart’s bell
Bringing a treat as the lilac buds swell

Huhtikuu Huhtikuu clearing days nigh
Sun and clouds battle in a pale spring sky
What shall I wish for in Huutikuu’s breeze?
A red kite to soar high over the trees
A swift game of softball, a walk in the rain
A splash in a puddle, a robin’s refrain

Toukokuu Toukokuu fragrant and green
Daffodils dancing, fit for a queen
What shall I wish for in Toukokuu’s sun?
A bicycle race with my friend just for fun
A garden to plant, new skates to try
A sliver of moon in an apple green sky

Kesakuu Kesakuu summer has come
Green leaves and blue skies and crickets that hum
What shall I wish for in Kesakuu’s warm?
A pile of white clouds, a bright summer storm
Ripe red strawberries juicy and sweet
A brook for wading, with frogs at my feet

Heinakuu Heinakuu fields of hay
Ripening now in the heat of the day
What shall I wish for in Heinakuu’s sizzle?
A woodland picnic, a sparkler to fizzle
A bluebird’s song, a swing in the park
A dance with the fireflies deep in the dark

Elokuu Elokuu earth teems with life
Lightening cuts through the clouds like a knife
What shall I wish for in Elokuu’s heat?
Peaches and blueberries, juicy and sweet
Time to soak up each hot summer day
Forgetting the cold that is coming our way

Syyskuu Syyskuu autumn moves in
Singing her song as the light pales and thins
What shall I wish for in Syyskuu’s crisp morn?
A brand new schoolbag, the old one is worn
A red ripe apple picked fresh from the tree
New friends to meet, old friends to see

Lokukuu Lokukuu muddy and wet
Summer days we will soon forget
What shall I wish for in Lokukuu’s showers?
A brand new book to pass the hours
A pumpkin to carve, fall leaves in the street
Dancing in yellow and red round my feet

Marraskuu Marraskuu gloomy and gray
Darkness comes down at the close of the day
What shall I wish for in Marraskuu’s storm?
A crackling fire to keep me warm
A Thanksgiving feast with my family close by
Turkey and dressing, and then comes the pie

Joulukuu Joulukuu season of joy
Angels and shepherds, a sweet baby boy
What shall I wish for in Joulukuu’s sleep?
Santa to come in the darkness so deep
Candles in windows, church bells that ring
Family and friends and the love that they bring
